56 Van Life Statistics on the RV Market, Travel and Participation

Van life is not measured by one official population series. The clearest direct category is the North American Type B van camper, while RV shipments, registrations and broader van traffic provide related but non-equivalent views of the market and its use.

North American RV Market Size and Direction

The RV Industry Association’s wholesale data shows a broad North American market that grew in 2024, but the increase came from different categories moving in opposite directions.

North American RV category 2024 shipments Change from 2023
Total RVs 333,733 +6.6%
Towable RVs 298,842 +11.8%
Motorized RVs 34,891 -23.9%
Type B van campers 8,349 -30.0%

These are manufacturer wholesale shipments, not household ownership, full-time residence, nights spent in vans or participation in van life. The RV Industry Association’s 2024 RV shipment report reports the annual categories and year-over-year changes.

RVIA also reported 23,153 total RV shipments in December 2024, up 7.6% from 21,522 in December 2023. For the six months ended June 30, 2024, North American wholesale shipments totaled 178,596, up 8.4% from 164,830 in the comparable 2023 period.

A September 2024 RVIA forecast projected about 324,100 North American wholesale units for calendar year 2024, up 3.5% from 2023. That forecast was lower than the later reported 333,733 actual shipments, so it should remain labeled as a forecast rather than treated as an observed result.

Type B is RVIA’s directly labeled van-camper category, but it does not include converted non-RV vans. Its 2024 decline was sharper than the movement in total RV shipments.

  • Type B van-camper shipments fell from 11,932 in 2023 to 8,349 in 2024, a 30.0% decrease in North America.
  • December 2024 Type B shipments were 528, down 14.7% from 619 in December 2023.
  • Type A conventional motorhomes totaled 6,706 shipments in 2024, down 31.6% from 9,806 in 2023.
  • Type C mini motorhomes totaled 19,836 shipments in 2024, down 17.8% from 24,141 in 2023.

All motorhome shipments totaled 45,879 in calendar year 2023 and 2,842 in December 2023. In December 2024, all motorhome shipments were 2,339, down 17.7% year over year; Type A shipments were 476, down 17.2%, and Type C shipments were 1,335, down 19.0%.

Type B vans represented about 23.9% of the 34,891 motorized RV shipments in 2024. This is a derived share from RVIA’s rounded whole-unit table, and its denominator includes Type A and Type C motorhomes.

The RV Industry Association report is the source for these shipment counts. The category boundary matters: a self-converted cargo van may be part of van life but is outside the Type B wholesale series.

Towable RV and Truck-Based Alternatives in Van Life Data

Towables are not self-propelled camper vans, yet they describe adjacent recreational-vehicle demand and help show how the broader market shifted in 2024.

Towable or truck-based category 2024 shipments Change from 2023
Travel trailers 237,631 +15.7%
Fifth-wheels 53,958 +0.5%
Folding camping trailers 3,991 -14.6%
Truck campers 3,262 -7.2%

Travel trailers made up about 79.5% of 2024 towable shipments, calculated as 237,631 of 298,842. That share describes the towable RV mix, not the share of people participating in van life.

December 2024 travel-trailer shipments reached 16,419, up 17.0% from December 2023. Fifth-wheel shipments were 3,866, down 7.5%; truck-camper shipments were 195, up 8.3%; and all towable RV shipments were 20,814, up 11.4% year over year.

For comparison, all towable RV shipments totaled 267,295 in calendar year 2023. The RVIA shipment report provides the category totals and cautions against treating towables as camper-van counts.

Van Travel Activity and Road-Use Data

Great Britain’s official road-traffic series measures vehicle movement, not recreational travel or van residence. The government defines the van population as goods vehicles not exceeding 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight, including car-based and transit-sized vans.

In calendar year 2024, vans traveled 58.5 billion vehicle miles in Great Britain, up 1.3% from 2023 and 9.5% above 2019. The series includes light commercial vehicles, ambulances, pickups and milk floats, so it is a broad road-use proxy rather than a van-life participation measure.

Great Britain road type 2024 van vehicle miles Share of van miles
Motorways 13.2 billion 23%
A roads 24.7 billion 42%
Minor roads 20.6 billion 35%

Monthly 2024 van traffic ranged from 7% to 14% above the equivalent 2019 months. Weather, holidays and calendar effects can influence those comparisons.

The UK government’s 2024 road-traffic release estimates annual traffic using around 8,000 manual traffic counts plus continuous automatic-counter data. As context, car and taxi traffic reached 256.1 billion vehicle miles in 2024, up 1.9% from 2023 but still 2.6% below 2019.

Van Life Market Demand, Registrations and Backlog

Retail registrations provide a different signal from wholesale shipments because they reflect vehicles recorded through official state and provincial records. They are still broader than van life, and the registration series is continuously updated with possible reporting delays and adjustments.

  • North American RV retail registrations totaled 188,142 in the six months ended June 30, 2024, down 11.2% from 211,876 in the comparable 2023 period.
  • Towable RV retail registrations totaled 166,760 in the first half of 2024, down 10.5% from 186,292.
  • Motorized RV retail registrations totaled 21,382, down 16.4% from 25,584.

THOR Industries separately reported company results in its fiscal-year 2024 filing. THOR’s North American wholesale shipments totaled 71,481 in the first half of 2024, up 10.6% from 64,639; towable shipments rose to 62,507, up 17.6%, while motorized shipments fell to 8,974, down 21.9%.

THOR’s retail registrations also moved lower: towable registrations were 65,216, down 15.6% from 77,242, and motorized registrations were 10,102, down 19.5% from 12,552. These are THOR products only and should not be merged with the industry-wide totals.

The THOR Industries Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended July 31, 2024 reported a North American RV backlog of $1.329 billion on July 31, 2024, down 33.5% from $1.999 billion a year earlier. Backlog represents orders, not completed sales or van-life households.

For the twelve months ended June 30, 2024, THOR’s combined travel-trailer and fifth-wheel retail market share was 40.4%, versus 42.4% in 2023. Its motorhome retail market share was 47.7%, versus 48.2% in 2023; neither figure isolates Type B vans.

What Van Life Participation Data Can and Cannot Measure

The available figures are strongest for manufacturing, registration and road movement. They do not establish how many people live in vans, how many owners travel full time, or how many converted vans exist outside the RV industry.

RVIA reports that its member companies produce approximately 98% of RVs manufactured in North America and approximately 60% of RVs produced worldwide. Those are association coverage estimates, not estimates of global van-life prevalence.

RVIA’s 2024 annual report listed 507 total association members: 115 RV manufacturers, 67 park-model RV manufacturers, 161 suppliers, 51 aftermarket suppliers, 17 finance firms, 82 associate members and 14 manufacturer’s representatives. These counts describe industry membership categories, not owners or residents.

The RV Industry Association’s report and the THOR Industries filing therefore support a careful reading: Type B shipments are the closest named camper-van measure, broad RV data shows adjacent market direction, and registrations show recorded vehicle activity.

The Great Britain road-traffic statistics show van traffic 9.5% above 2019 while car and taxi traffic was 2.6% below 2019, a derived 12.1-percentage-point difference between broad vehicle trends. It cannot be interpreted as a 12.1-point increase in van living because the vehicle populations include different uses and do not identify recreational residents.
