59 Commercial Van Statistics on Markets, Fleets, Electrification and Work

Commercial vans connect vehicle markets with delivery work, trade activity and fleet investment. The figures below distinguish new registrations, vehicles in use, company sales, production and labor-market measures across the European Union, the United States and global markets.

ACEA’s registration series counts new vehicles entering service, so it measures annual market flow rather than the total fleet. In 2024, new EU van registrations reached 1,586,688, an 8.3% increase from 2023, while the broader commercial-vehicle comparison showed different movements.

EU new registrations Period Result
Vans 2024 1,586,688; +8.3%
Trucks 2024 327,896; -6.3%
Buses 2024 35,579; +9.2%

Source: ACEA, New commercial vehicle registrations: vans +8.3%, trucks -6.3%, buses +9.2% in 2024. Truck and bus figures are comparison categories, not van totals.

The first half of 2024 was also strong for EU vans: 840,409 registrations, up 15% from H1 2023. Over the same half-year period, trucks reached 183,295 registrations, up 3%, and buses reached 20,370, up 28.6%; these are separate vehicle categories.

Commercial Van Powertrain and Electrification Statistics

The 2024 EU registration mix remained heavily diesel-based. Diesel vans accounted for 1,340,003 new registrations, up 10.5%, and held an 84.5% share, 1.7 percentage points higher than the previous year.

Powertrain measure EU 2024 result Change or definition
Diesel vans 1,340,003; 84.5% share Registrations up 10.5%; share up 1.7 points
Petrol vans 6% share Registrations up 3%
Electrically chargeable vans 6.1% share Down from 7.2% in 2023; registrations down 9.1%
Hybrid-electric vans 2% share Sales down 4.8%

Source: ACEA, New commercial vehicle registrations: vans +8.3%, trucks -6.3%, buses +9.2% in 2024.

“Electrically chargeable” is ACEA’s category and may include more than battery-electric vehicles; it should not be read as a battery-electric-only measure. The figures describe new registrations, not the powertrain composition of all vans already on the road.

In H1 2024, diesel vans accounted for 708,624 new EU registrations, up 16.2%, and held an 84.3% share of new van sales. That half-year result is a sales-flow measure and is not directly interchangeable with the annual fleet estimate below.

Commercial Van Fleet Size and Vehicle-Age Data

ACEA’s road-fleet statistics count vehicles in use, a different population from new registrations. For 2024, ACEA estimated about 31.1 million vans on EU roads, up 1.9% year over year, with electrically chargeable vans representing 1.3% of that fleet.

EU road-fleet measure 2024 estimate or observation Scope
Vans in use About 31.1 million; +1.9% EU van road fleet
Electrically chargeable vans 1.3% EU van road fleet
Trucks in use About 6.2 million; +0.9% Comparison category
Average truck age 14 years Comparison category
Buses in use About 700,000; +1.8% Comparison category
Electrically chargeable buses 3.5% Comparison category

Battery-electric buses exceeded 10% of the bus fleet in four EU countries: Denmark, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Sweden. The source reports the threshold and country count, not each country’s exact share, and the bus finding should not be generalized to vans.

European Country Commercial Van Statistics

The major European markets all recorded growth in new van registrations in 2024, but the pace varied considerably. Spain led the listed full-year increases, while France and Italy were close to flat.

Country 2024 new-van registration change H1 2024 change
Spain +13.7% +18.5%
Germany +8.4% +19.3%
France +1.1% +10.5%
Italy +0.9% +17.8%

Sources: ACEA, 2024 commercial-vehicle registrations and ACEA, H1 2024 commercial-vehicle registrations. The first column is full-year 2024; the second covers only the first half.

These percentages describe changes in new registrations, not differences in the installed fleet, vehicle age or commercial activity. They also do not provide country-level unit totals in the supplied measures.

Commercial Van Production and Regional Market Data

Production and sales answer different questions: production measures vehicles manufactured, while registrations and sales measure market delivery or purchase activity. Globally, van production declined 4.6% in 2024.

ACEA also reported that global truck production declined 8.3% in 2024, while South American truck production increased 37.1%. Those truck figures are useful industry context but are not van statistics.

World bus production reached 362,005 units in 2024, up 10.3%. In the EU bus trade data, import values increased 6.4% and export values fell 19.2%; both are bus comparison measures rather than commercial-van trade totals.

North American commercial-vehicle sales reached 4 million units in 2024, up 1.7% year over year and representing 30% of the referenced market total. ACEA identifies this as a broad commercial-vehicle category, not a van-only series.

U.S. Commercial Van Sales and Electric-Van Performance

Ford’s 2023 sales release provides company-reported U.S. commercial-van figures, not a census of the national market. Ford sold 190,016 commercial vans, up 21% year over year, including 129,009 Transit vans, up 30%, and 42,957 E-Series cutaway vans, up 34%.

Ford U.S. measure 2023 result Change
Commercial vans 190,016 +21%
Transit vans 129,009 +30%
E-Series cutaway vans 42,957 +34%
E-Transit 7,672 +18% from 2022

Ford also reported 72,608 total electric-vehicle sales in 2023, up 18%, and 25,937 EV sales in Q4 2023, up 24% from Q3. These totals cover all Ford EVs, not commercial vans alone.

The same company release stated 45 consecutive years of commercial-van leadership through 2023. That is Ford’s stated leadership claim; the filing excerpt does not define the comparison market or a third-party methodology.

Commercial Van Delivery Work, Wages and Outlook

BLS occupational statistics provide labor-market proxies for van activity rather than vehicle counts. In 2025, delivery truck drivers and driver/sales workers held 1,511,400 U.S. jobs, comprising 1,068,500 light truck drivers and 442,900 driver/sales workers.

U.S. occupation measure 2025 jobs Median annual wage, May 2025
Delivery truck drivers and driver/sales workers 1,511,400 $43,950
Light truck drivers 1,068,500 $44,860
Driver/sales workers 442,900 $38,770

Source: BLS, Delivery Truck Drivers and Driver/Sales Workers: Occupational Outlook Handbook. These occupations include work involving small trucks or vans and are broader than commercial-van driving alone.

The industry mix shows where the work is concentrated. In 2025, 37% of light truck drivers worked in couriers and messengers, 17% in retail trade and 14% in wholesale trade; among driver/sales workers, 39% worked in food services and drinking places, 25% in wholesale trade and 9% in retail trade.

BLS projects delivery truck driver and driver/sales employment to grow 7% from 2025 to 2035, with about 152,700 openings per year. The annual opening estimate includes replacement openings and is not equivalent to new van demand.

Occupation outlook 2025–2035 projection
Delivery truck drivers and driver/sales workers +7%; 1,614,400 jobs in 2035, up 103,000
Driver/sales workers +8%; 478,100 jobs in 2035, up 35,200
Light truck drivers +6%; 1,136,400 jobs in 2035, up 67,800
